Native

Native place is very special to everyone, especially for fella’s like me, who are from rural areas. Me and my wife used to fight which one is great (though our natives are adjacent ones within a km)
I tend to ask this questions to all my foreign friends whenever they order for ‘Madras Lamb Curry’ from an Indian restaurant.

“Do you know what 'Madras' meant in Madras Lamb Curry?”

Usually the answer would be ***Blink*** or “Isit the person who invented the curry?” and the few sharp ones wud give the right answer.
With all pride I would give the answer explaining I am from the same place (and the hidden part is Do you have anything spl from your native?? Haha)

Whenever we Indians meet here the intial discussion would be “ where are you from in India?”

“Madras”

“Where in Madras?”

“Not exactly Madras, native is down south mmm Do you know Tirunelveli”

“I know Tirunelveli – where there?”

“Tirunelveli district – Ambasamudram”

recently when I had this discussion with a Srilankan Tamil family in a friends party

“Ambasamudram – yeah we know that place very well”

***1000 watts bulb in my face*** Isit – how come?

“Infact we are looking forward to visit Amabasamudram in our next India trip”

“howwww whyyy” (****whats so special there while I am here ;) ***)

“Its very famous noo…”

“**(now got it) collars up*** – isit through tamil cinemas you know that place?" ****almost most of the recent films are filmed there only, haaa its very popular location you see ****

“No no – that’s where Sun TV Annamalai serial was filmed right? That temple is so nice that we wanted to visit that temple. Have you been there?”

me- ***blink blink isit I never knew this apart from that loosu character in that serial**** Ohhhh yeeeaahh…yes …we have been there…(was looking at my wife for help *** Do you know which temple they are referring*****

My wife – “Its not exactly in Ambasamudram – it’s a near by place Alwarkurichi”. Thank god she watched it while at India and knew something about this

Me – “****that’s enuf I will samalichufy now**** yeah that temple is famous I did my college there…blah blah even Marmadesam serial was filmed in a near by place Brammadesam ….blah blah”

My wife was staring at me ****enuf enuf idhu kooda unga oorra pathi theriyala thoooo (don’t you know even this about your place?) ****

Pardon???

I am sure many of us will remember the Purulia arms drop incident. Foreign nationals involved in this incident were convicted and were sentenced to life imprisonment. I was shocked to read that most of them are now pardoned and released just because of their Government intervention. I can't see any justification in this. Will US release the Indian arms dealer who was last year arrested for selling arms to terrorist, if India requested a pardon for him? Or would UK entertain any such cases? Don’t know if this is my ignorance, but I can’t digest.

Tube, Train and Rayil

Was late into office today as bcos of the heavy snow yesterday. As expected the train and tube services were at chaos. Even in summer whole rail network was in chaos bcos of very high temperature one day. And guess the so called very high temperature – It was 36 degrees Celsius and was only for a day. Phew, I think Indian Railway network is much more resilient, for the scorching summer and lashing rains we experience.

MP vs Newspaper

"The Sun" is one of UK's leading selling papers. Its very popular for the page 3 topless models.
Recently Clare Short, Labour MP repeated her attack on the daily diet of pictures of topless women in the tabloid. The Sun in response published more topless models in Page 1 itself and featured a morphed topless model image with Clare Short's face. To add to all these it sent a delegation of Page 3 models to the MP's house in a double decker bus.

hmmm It was totally different style when compared to Indian politics.

Backblog

I was wondering why Backblog is restricting me alone (in the known blog circle) to just 5 feedback entries per post.
I started probing the backblog site and found the following

  • Limited to five feedback entries per blog entry. This is for new users, beginning Oct 4, 2003.

  • Andddd I registered for backblog exactly on Oct 4, 2003.

    Cmon India

I feared this with my recent experiences.

British firm announces wind up of Indian call-centre.

May be this has happened bcos of our lack of experience. But let us show the world again that we can master anything, like what we did in IT.

    Cmon India !!!

    Cmon Chennai

It was a pleasant surprise for me when I called my UK bank last week to know that the call center is in Chennai- the place where I come from.
Despite some very minor problems in getting information I enjoyed the call. Today I had to follow up on that call again. I was glad that I could speak to a chennaite again.
The gal I spoke with got all my details (which clearly will tell that I am a south Indian.) and suddenly switched over to a heavy English accent.
I was put on hold and transferred to another extn. where I had no response. Had to call again and again some other problems.
I am not sure whether this negligence is bcos I was a south Indian or the inexperience of the person I spoke with.
For my cheer and enthu before the call, It was little disheartening. hmmmm

    Attention Apps

Dunno if you still read my blogs, but when I try to launch yours, my IE always crashes and I am experiencing this since last week.
Anyone else - Isit just me or you too? Dunno how else to update her of the problem. Just pass this on if you are able to get thro'.

    Pongal

Only villages have more relevance to Pongal festival is my personal opinion. Many of my city friends knew nothing about the significance of Pongal apart from “Sarkara Pongal”.

City Celebration style of Pongal is different altogether. Day off, Star interviews, “Ulagath tholaikatchigalilaye mudavalatha thiraku sameebathilaye vandha putham puthiya thirapadam” Sun TV movies, Sarkara Pongal, Marina beach.

Though I would not call my native place as a village, it was surrounded by lots of villages and so the impact would be in my place also.

I don’t blame anyone, this just came to my mind.

Whatever, Wishing you all a very happy pongal.

    helloooooo

Following are some of the "Sure to have" kind of dialogues in my telephone calls to India(All of them are in Tamil). I enjoy these a lot.

    Ippo anga mani ethanai?

    Romba kuzhira anga?

Udamba parthukongo. (plural - for me+wife+kid)

    Kuzhanthaiku udambukku onnumillaye?

    Eppo varel oorukku?

Officela onnum prechanai illaye? (ever since I updated the IT field redundancies in 2001)

Mela yethavadhu padikaraya? ("........Doctor kitta adikadi checkup pannikarela?" will be my answer)

    Ella palasarakkum kidakartholyo?

Seven seas Maatharai ozhunga pottukariya (My parents buy me seven seas cod liver oil tablet since my school days and still they give me a stock everytime during my India trip)

Ozunga sandhi Pannu. Thinamum 108 gayathri jabikirayo 64vadhu pannu? (My default answer is always Yes! which will make me guilty for a couple of days every month)

    Help me Dr.

I have changed my desk within my office. Its very near to a room, where people involved in multimedia design sit. To get more creativeness they have the music on all the time which really annoys me at times. I wish Dr.Krishnasamy be my colleague to rename these creative minds and shut the music. :)

    Oops...

A Nokia mobile phone exploded in a man's pocket in Vietnam's central City of Danang, state media reported on Saturday, in the latest such incident to occur.

Last month a man suffered facial injuries in Bien Hoa, just north of Vietnam's southern business capital of Ho Chi Minh City, after his Nokia 8310 handset exploded

In October a woman suffered burns to her stomach and hand when her Nokia 8210 handset exploded in Ho Chi Minh City.

Me being brave, I don’t want to stop using Nokia, but atleast need to change the habit of keeping my phone in the pant pocket to limit the Damages :))

    Ponniyin Selvan Kalki

The nicest thing that has happened to me after moving in to my current house in London is - me getting back to library days. Our council library has a very good collection of Tamil books (as there are lots of Indian and Srilankan Tamils in the area). I love this library. I had a chance to read all in my wish list. Best thing was the much talked “Ponniyin Selvan” (all 5 volumes) by Amarar Kalki. I would recommend this strongly to anyone who is interested in Tamil literature. This book is absolutely fantastic. I have become a great fan of Kalki after reading this. I am aiming to read all his other novels as well and have managed “Sivakamiyin Sabatham”, “Parthiban Kanavu” so far.

Given the volume of these books with great quality, the Tamil world is very much indebted to ‘Amarar’ Kalki(Pardon my language as I don’t get an English equivalent word for “Kaviyam” in Tamil. ‘Novel’ would be an insult as this is the term used for all other cheap ones as well). Despite their volumes I always felt why it ended there and it would have been very nice if this had gone to two further volumes. Such was Kalki's writing. I really doubt if there is anything else in the modern Tamil literature that can match these. There are fans all over the world for this book and there is a yahoo group for discussing this book itself.
While I searched for links related to Ponniyin selvan I was really surprised to see that this is now available online. You can read ponniyin selvan online here. I have not gone through this so I dont gurantee the full form or availability. But this is really an bonanza. A BIG thanks to all those who were involved in this. Ponniyin Selvan Online Link

    World is not small (Always)

I recently got in touch with a school friend of mine from my hometown. He joined the same company Ramco, where I started my career, soon after I left that company. I had lots of contacts in the company and had even visited the company once in-between. I did not have any clue about this friend despite having lots of contacts in that company. After 3 years now, a mail sent to one of my friends there has reestablished our links. Sometimes World is...

    Excuse these excuses

Have you ever made up excuses? It’s really an art to makeup believable excuses. My TV License was due for renewal and I renewed it online. I came across all these cheap funny TV License excuses which obviously got exposed. :)
